It’s important for any homeowner to know how they can shut off their water heater gas supply. There are a variety of reasons you might need to turn off the gas for your water heater. Maybe you need the gas off so you can replace your water heater with a new one. However, you might have to turn off the gas for a more serious reason. The smell of gas can hint at a possible disaster, and you’ll need to shut off the gas to stay safe.
Words of warning

CenterPoint Energy has instructions for dealing with the smell of gas. Their instructions suggest you leave your home on foot for somewhere safer and then call 911 and CenterPoint Energy when you’re safely far away. That advice is for what to do when the smell of gas is strong. However, if the smell is weak, follow our advice for what to do about the problem before it gets worse.

Shutting off the gas

There are two ways to shut off your water heater’s gas. You can shut off the gas completely outside at the gas meter or for the water heater alone at the shutoff valve near the water heater. Shutting off the gas completely is the better option in emergency situations, but knowing both ways to shut off the gas is important.

For the water heater’s gas supply, look around the unit for a single valve handle. You can often find it at the bottom of the unit about a foot or two out. Then, turn the handle 90° to shut off the gas. After that, ensure that the water heater has actually turned off. To do this, turn up the water heater’s temperature and then check the access hatch at the bottom to see if the burner is off.

Meanwhile, the outside gas shutoff valve is right next to your gas meter on the side of your house. Like with the water heater’s valve, you can shut this off by turning the valve 90°. This valve is a little tougher so you’ll likely need a wrench to turn this one on or off.

However you shut it off, if you’ve turned off the gas because of a potential leak, you should then call your gas company to get them to fix the leak.
