Safe Decorating Tips Holidays Fix It

When adding holiday decorations around your home, you want to be extra careful to avoid hazards such as accidental trips, falls, fires, and other holiday-related accidents.

In addition to checking things like old string lights and being aware of ladder safety, you also want to double-check for fire hazards that may be caused by the extra decorations, such as candles and flammable items.

Unsafe Electrical Products and Improper Wiring

If you are using extension cords make sure they have been properly rated for either indoor or outdoor use. Check all of your lights and electrical devices before use and recycle them if they are damaged.

When purchasing electrical devices, look for the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label—this indicates the product has been tested by an independent testing laboratory. Remember that extension cords are only to be used temporarily.

Never rely on extension cords as a permanent solution—instead, hire a professional to install extra outlets and circuits as needed.

Be Aware of Ladder Safety

Whether you are cleaning out gutters or hanging string lights, make sure you know important ladder safety tips first. In addition to making sure you are using the right type of ladder, there are many other things to check before starting the climb.

Ladder safety tips include making sure it is on level ground, avoid entries and traffic areas, avoiding inclement weather conditions, and following all of the manufacture instructions.

  • Always face the ladder when climbing or descending.
  • Stay centered between the two rails of the ladder.
  • Always maintain three points of contact when ascending or descending.
  • NEVER overreach to hang lights or decorations. Always move the ladder.
  • Do not carry any objects that could cause you to fall or lose balance.
  • Before making any moves on the ladder, think about what you want to do and move slowly. Don’t make any sudden movements or jerks, such as swatting an insect.

Check for Tripping Hazards

  • Never run cords in high-traffic areas or anywhere that can cause a tripping hazard.
  • Make sure none of your decorations represent a tripping hazard or are blocking any exits.
  • Check for folds in carpets/rugs, loose treads on exterior steps, and loose wood boards, steps, and pathways.
  • Double-check your front walkway and other pathways leading to your home for any hazards.
  • Ensure there is proper lighting for your home to make sure people can safely navigate to your front door.
  • Replace any bulbs as necessary.

If you do find any hazards that aren’t fixable in time, alert your guests to their presence. This includes irrigation systems, holes, and other problems that may cause harm.
